calculating columns

I have a document with a number of sections (representing chapters of 
a book). Within those sections are additional items. I would like to 
be able to calculate the total number of items in the book and cannot 
figure out how. Additional, I have a checkbox column with status 
(written, edited, etc) that I would also like to calculate. Is this 
possible with omni outliner?
