Mr. Bartel:
Thank you for your prompt and very interesting response! Unfortunately,
in the end, it was not what I wanted (which is not your fault):

I tried what you suggested -- turning on "zooming" in the Universal
Access pane in the System Preferences. Unfortunately, what that does is
zoom the entire desktop and screen, which is not quite what I want. (In
fact, it was interesting, in a roller coaster sort of way; moving the
mouse moved the screen in the opposite direction. But too creepy and
vertiginous for me.)
I seem to remember that the Omni folks had been asked long ago about
zooming as a feature. I hope it is still on their to-do list. Sadly, I
might be unable to use OmniOutliner effectively without this feature --
and my eyesight is not very bad at all. I cannot be the only user whose
eyesight is going South (or who uses a high pixel-density monitor).
There are rumors that Apple is looking to make changes to Quartz to
make applications and windows resolution independent, though it has not
been announced for Tiger OS X 10.4. That would be the ultimate solution
to my problems.
Therefore, if the fine folks at Omni are listening, please take this as
a feature request: give some upcoming version of OmniOutliner the
ability to zoom text. Your users will thank you.
Best wishes,
Clint
