I was going to bring up the same thing myself. All of the widget
animation seems a bit excessive to me. In the change file it is stated
that animation was added to reduce visual confusion, but I cannot
think of one time where I became so confused that I was lost, because
parts of the outline collapsed when I told it to -- unless the
application was poorly written and the upper portion above the fold
jumped around. As long as everything below the fold is what moves --
there isn't anything confusing. Animating the folding process makes
everything feel very slow.
The application QuickSilver has an option to turn off excessive visual
flare, I think something of similar nature should be adopted in OO3.
Things like that tend to distract, and in an application whose very
purpose is to capture thought and be completely out of the way about
it -- it is a little much. OO2 was much better at being simple and out
of the way. A conduit for your thoughts. The tool should not intrude,
and animation intrudes for the same reason that it reduces visual
confusion.
