Save time question

I second this critique.  My biggest outline is 1.5 MB, it only takes 3 
seconds to save on my Dual 1GHz, G4, but the fact the the UI blocks 
during the save is very disconcerting.  The blocking is bad enough that 
I'm tempted to turn off the auto-save feature.  (I also tried turning 
on compression, the file size was reduced to 0.5MB and the save time 
was essentially unchanged.)

Could some or all of the saving process be done in a background thread 
so the UI doesn't block?
