Like Tom Nawara said in the previous thread post, if you do not need the images
to be insanely large (in size), you must shrink them. Usually using an image
filter, like ImageViewer.app, and shrinking the images by crudely reducing
their size in the inspector results in distortions and other unwanted loss in
image quality.
I would suggest that you get an image manipulation program like CIC or a
wonderful paint box like Wetpaint.app. Besides many wonderful things, Wetpaint
will allow you to reduce the size of the images and at the same time anti-alias
them so as to get rid of the harsh distortions.
Last I knew you could find a demo copy of Wetpaint or CIC in ft.cs.orst.edu.
Hope you find this is helpful.

P.S. For a peek at some impressive things wetpaint can allow you to achieve,
check out the images in my home page (WARNING : the bigger gifs are approx. 40k
in size....)
