Font for text areas

Is it necessary to force <textarea>s to use a fixed width font?
Surely we could use <pre> or <tt> if we want fixed width?

Further, the fixed width font used for textareas seems to be either
larger than or different from that used for <pre>: I set the defaults
FixedPitchFont and FixedPitchRTFFont to Courier so that <b> and <i>
would be visible in pre-formatted text, and increased the font size
to 12 as I find Courier harder to read than Ohlfs. Now textareas that
I thought were a reasonable size occupy half the screen (they're only
70 columns wide - I figured a minimum 80 column display a reasonable
assumption - but are more than half the width of a MegaPixel
display).
