ppp and omniweb

Hi,
I grabbed ppp from cs.orst.edu over the weekend and installed OmniWeb at home.
Everything works fine, except that the ppp link is _incredibly_ slow.
My speed problem does not seem to be due to the modem (14.4), but to some
problem with ppp.

During this interval, I was opening a page using omniWeb. When I open this page
from school (the site I ppp to) it is very fast. So I assume that my modem
should be a serious bottleneck. However, there are long periods where the
lights aren't blinking much and (as shown above) not much data is moving
through.
What gives?
Is there some problem with the alpha ppp that kills performance? I've fiddled
with the compression options quite a bit, but these seems to have only a small
effect on performance.
I don't think this is an omniweb problem. I get the same performance problems
when I ftp or rlogin.
