How about when in the input filed use the arrow keys to cycle through  
http://; ftp://; news: gopher://; wais: (seems to be broken) ... in that  
order.

Better yet have a popup button field next to the input field that will, by  
default, be set up to http:// and have all the conceivable choices available,  
plus an editable blank field.
