Yep, I'd guess its related to this or something similar. Maybe users seeing this problem have had a PDF viewer (e.g. Adobe Reader) set as default PDF handler and then disposed of it. Being generally speaking a graphic file format, it could be that the global defaults for PDF handler will reset to Quicktime if a previously set default handler is no longer available ?

Having said that, I've never seen this issue myself.
