Thank you, that did work. I think I'd tried that without success,
probably because I already had local styles set on some/all of the
notes.
However, that brings up another related point. As I was moving down my
expanded outline, Clearing Styles from my (inline) notes, I
encountered the following behavior: if the last note I Cleared was
scrolled off the screen, when I clicked the note icon to open the next
note, the outline scrolled back to the insertion point (apparently).
That is, I have just edited Note1, which is now scrolled off the
screen, and I'm looking at the item containing Note2. When I attempt
to open Note2 the outline jumps back to Note1, scrolling my mental
focus (Note2) completely off the screen. This is most confusing. If I
click on the item containing Note2 before opening the note, this jump
does not occur. But still, it definitely fails the "Least
Astonishment" test, for me at least.
