how do Ihandle ".gz"

(1) Do you have NS 3.2 or later?
(2) Do you have NS Developer?

if (1), "gnutar" is delivered with the system, and can cope with ".gz"
files.
if (2) but not (1), one of the GNU ftp mirror sites
(ftp.cs.columbia.edu:/archives/gnu/prep or prep.ai.mit.edu:/pub/gnu)

To get the system to handle either of the above (and lots of other stuff)
automatically, use Opener.app, which someone described to the list.
