There used to be a 2.1 application called Unknown that let you easily map  
filename extensions onto arbitrary shell commands (so the shell command  
command, paramterized with the filename, is executed when the file is opened  
in the Workspace). I don't know if it's been ported to 3.x, but if so, it  
should allow .au and custom extensions to be handled.
